"First Person Plural" - Round 2

January 28, 2013
by Leanna Leon
Jerry Gregoire

Will Luera
Snow is freckling from the clouds, but the temperature is rising in Davis Square's Rosebud Bar and Grill. Laughter, tears, and soul fill the venue as four fabulous storytellers “shock” the mic with their recollections of experience and "ponderings" about the world around them. The wonderful tellers of the night each added personality, heart, and smiles. The first act to grace the stage was a Mr. Jerry Gregoire, music director for "Live Bait," an open mic in Providence, RI. Beginning with his formula for a good story, he stated his belief that, "Storytelling is in the moment, no matter if it's rehearsed." His magic on the strings added a rhythmic aspect to the lyrical stories and sarcasm. Folk and blues flowed through the audience, sparking movement in his listeners, and his natural presence brought truth to his ethic.

Next up were a few very useful travel tips from Mr. Will Luera, artistic Director of ImprovBoston and Mainstage Director at ImprovAsylum. The audience listened on the edge of their seats to a series of unfortunate events during a trip to Korea with his family. Recounting the disastrous diplomatic confusion of Seoul turned out to be a whirlwind but a good story. A grave lesson to readers: if customs ask for a boarding pass, run for your life and get on that plane! (Don’t miss out: http://www.improvboston.com/)

"Big Scott" Schultz
Peggy Melanson
The mood switched with the next act to share, Mr. Scott Schultz, a winner at the Big MouthOff (season 2) and massmouth’s Emerging Storyteller (season 3). He told a story out of a Cuba Gooding Jr. movie, encompassing passion, leadership and all of the things that make life worth it; the personal story of a group of misfits recruited to an L.A. City College Basketball league with less of a chance and more losses than competing teams. There was anger and hopelessness but the growth of connection as a team through the season lead to the moment of victory. Scott, as the assistant coach, not only grew to feel like part of the team but felt a deep sense of solidarity with the members. Of course last, but not least, Ms. Peggy Melanson, who left everyone’s jaw hanging a few inches from the ground after sharing a story of a birthday wish gone wrong - all tied in a bright red bow. The historical/ geographical photos of Davis Square “back in the day” added great visuals. Her presence and sarcasm were infectious. Don’t feel left out, more of her great stories can be found online: www.findingcourage.com

Having the opportunity to share your life with strangers and grab the attention of their ears and hearts and minds is precious and a ton of laughs. I hope to see you there next time!
