StorySpace: Weekly Update July 16th

StorySpace: Weekly Update
by Yana Sherman
New this week:
Welcome guest Blogger Yana Sherman. We will feature a post by Yana  Sherman at the beginning of each week about what was heard at StorySpace and what is coming up. StorySpace is a long running ( perhaps the longest running) open mic dedicated to live storytelling. They are there every week, whether the creek rises or not.

July 16th This past week at Story Space was phenomenal.  We had a visit from Roger Armstrong, a member of the Board of the National Storytelling Network, visiting from Arkansas.  He told a tale of a Coca Cola cooler that foiled a robbery.  There was also a story of a catfish so big that it pulled a tugboat .  Our featured teller, Jim Harriman told about people he'd met along the way through life.  That included a mechanic with a high IQ and a prison record, and special needs student who taught her teachers a
few things and a fictional account of musical friendship over decades.  There was also the appearance of four frisky kittens who are the newest members of the gallery's feline family.
Libby Franck
Libby has storytelling in her bones. Her mother told tales in Midwestern libraries in the 1920's & 30's and now Libby continues the tradition. She has worked as a librarian for the Natick and Brookline schools and for the Boston Public Library. This week, Libby Franck will be our featured teller.  Known for her historic portrayal of various characters, Libby is using her research skills in a different way.  Her story will center on a painting by Norman Rockwell.  While the artist is best known for wholesome Americana, this particular painting had a sinister feeling.  Libby will blend the history of the painting with events of her life.
Each evening kicks off with Open Mic at 7 p.m. Tellers have eight minutes to try new material or polish an old favorite.  First-time tellers are guaranteed a spot and listeners are always welcome. Libby will begin her feature at 8:15

The venue is a gallery that is a short walk from  Central Square T.  It is cozy and conducive to creative spirit. Very nurturing and a great place to try new material.  And check out the four new kittens that are inhabitants of the Gallery. We have a suggested donation of $5 to ensure that the tradition of stories of Tuesday night continues into it's third decade.
