BEASTS in Jamaica Plain!

Neighbors for Neighbors founder Joseph Porcelli
entertained the crowded room at Bella Luna's Milkyway Lounge.
At 6:20 p.m on Sunday, February 20th, a full ten minutes before the start of the massmouth story slam at Jamaica Plain's Bella Luna there wasn't an empty seat to be found and the floor space was filling in fast! Story tellers gathered round, most of them sitting on stage, to tell their tales about "Beasts". The night was filled with stories about cats, mice, cockroaches and even that bureaucratic beast: managed health care. Jamaica Plain's very own Joseph Porcelli, founder and Chief Executive Neighbor (Jamaica Plain) of Neighbors for Neighbors, rounded out the evening's entertainment with his own experiences of snow beasts and a dog with a very unhappy belly. Hosts Robin Maxfield and H.R. Britton kept the evening flowing while sporting a lobster hat and bunny ears, respectively.

Winners David Corbeau and Justin Werfel
proudly display their massmouth t-shirts.
Eight story tellers took the stage before the last two blew the house away, as well as the judges. First place winner David Corbeau was the last story teller of the evening. He related with great emotional enthusiasm how his beloved cat wrought terror into him and his wife one evening when it set off the paper shredder in a darkened room. Two days later, David fished the singed kitty out of the dryer and thanked it for surviving its tumble. David won a $50 gift certificate to Bella Luna, a massmouth winner's t-shirt, and the opportunity to praise his beautiful cat once more at the Big Mouthoff in Rabb Hall Auditorium at the Boston Public Library on April 26th.

Second place winner, Justin Werfel, the evening's ninth storyteller, described a harrowing bike ride in Alaska involving multiple encounters with multiple moose. Jusin's experience, told with great descriptive detail, left the audience with a new appreciation for these majestic creatures and a memorable story of what not to do around moose. Justin won a $25 gift certificate to Bella Luna, a massmouth winner's t-shirt, and a chance to compete in the semi-final round at the Coolidge Corner Theater on Thursday, April 14th, starting at 7:00 p.m.
